Stellantis is recalling 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that could lead to the failure of their electronic stability control systems. The defective anti-lock breaking system, which deactivates the stability control system, poses a significant safety risk for drivers. The recalled models include the 2022 Dodge Durango, 2022 Ram 2500, and 2022 Ram 3500.

The issue is critical since electronic stability control systems are essential for maintaining steering control in emergency situations such as driving on icy or flooded roads. Studies have shown that ESC systems can reduce fatal collisions, especially single-vehicle and rollover crashes. Since 2012, all new passenger cars have been required to include an ESC system for added safety.

Driving with a disabled stability system increases the risk of a crash significantly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), using a vehicle with a disabled stability system can lead to accidents and injuries. In response to this recall, Stellantis will notify affected vehicle owners in late July, providing them with a free update to fix the anti-lock braking systems.

Stellantis has not provided any comments regarding this recall when CNN requested information about it. However, it’s crucial for drivers to understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ safety features and taking action promptly if they receive any recalls or warnings from manufacturers.
