The Steelers made two roster moves on Wednesday, cutting backup defensive back Trenton Thompson and wide receiver Denzel Mims. Thompson, 26, joined the team during their 2023 training camp and moved between the practice squad and active roster before going on injured reserve on Jan. 10. In the previous season, he appeared in six games with one start, playing 212 defensive snaps and 58 on special teams. Thompson recorded 22 tackles and an interception during his time with the Steelers.

The release of Thompson may have been influenced by the Steelers drafting safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round. This addition to the team’s roster likely played a role in Thompson’s departure as he was primarily a backup player. Pittsburgh also announced the release of Mims, a move that was previously reported after being cut by New York Jets last year. Mims had not seen any game action with the Steelers since joining them in December through a waiver claim.
