On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Izaiah Gathings to a one-year contract after a successful tryout. Gathings, who switched from wide receiver to tight end while playing at Middle Tennessee, had limited playing time with the Chiefs and only recorded one reception in the preseason.

Gathings will join a talented tight end group that already includes Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward, Darnell Washington, Rodney Williams, and MyCole Pruitt. With the team likely keeping only three tight ends on the roster, competition for a spot will be fierce during OTAs as the coaching staff evaluates players in preparation for the upcoming season.

Under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the tight end position is expected to play a more prominent role in the Steelers’ offense. This shift in strategy is part of the team’s ongoing assessment of its roster, with a focus on strengthening the wide receiver and cornerback positions, which currently present the biggest uncertainties.

As fans eagerly await further developments and adjustments to be made by the Steelers before they gear up for their new season.
