Cleveland’s beloved sports anchor, Jim Donovan, has announced his retirement from television news. His final broadcast on the local NBC affiliate will take place on June 10th. After 37 years in the industry, Donovan expressed his gratitude to his viewers, Browns fans, colleagues and everyone who has been a part of his journey.

Originally from Boston, Donovan joined 3News in 1985 as the weekend sports anchor. In 1999, he became the radio voice of the Cleveland Browns when the team returned after a three-year break. Despite not having called a Browns Super Bowl win yet, Donovan is optimistic and will continue to announce games in the upcoming season.

Donovan’s career took a detour in 2000 when he was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011. After announcing a relapse in May 2023, he took a medical leave later that year but returned to work in November. In February 2024, he marked the end of his radiation treatment.

In addition to reporting on sports during evening newscasts, Donovan has anchored the station’s “Front Row” program since 2012. He has received multiple regional Emmy awards and is a member of the Hall of Fame for both the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters and The Press Club of Cleveland.

WKYC President & GM Micki Byrnes praised Donovan’s accomplished career and plans to honor his achievements as he steps down from his position. While Donovan has requested a quiet exit
