The Spanish Government is set to approve the largest public employment offer in history at the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, with over 40,000 positions available. This commitment to public employment is a departure from previous administrations and a focus on strengthening the public sector in Spain.

Since 2018, Pedro Sánchez’s Executive has called for more than 220,000 civil service positions, with significant increases in the number of positions offered each year. The distribution of these positions includes over 20,000 openings in the General State Administration (AGE) and additional positions for internal promotion, totaling 40,121 available seats.

Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, José Luis Escrivá highlighted the significance of public employment in Spain’s labor market, emphasizing the need to increase the percentage of public employment. Despite some concerns raised by unions like CSIF about reducing net job creation and hindering staff renewal, UGT approved the offer.

The government’s efforts to increase public employment are also mirrored in its recent decision to increase civil servants’ salaries by 2%, with an additional 0.5% based on inflation. With a significant focus on public employment and civil service well-being, the government is working to address the needs of its workforce and strengthen the public sector in Spain.
