Pharyngitis, or inflammation of the throat mucosa, is a common condition that affects both children and adults. Symptoms include pain, discomfort when swallowing, itchy throat, and throat irritation. While many cases resolve on their own within 5-7 days, some progress to bronchitis or pneumonia. Acute pharyngitis presents with symptoms like itching and burning in the throat, as well as soreness when speaking or eating. Chronic pharyngitis can last for several weeks and may lead to complications such as laryngitis or tracheitis.

Dr. Nguyen Van Ngan from Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi advises against swallowing mucus when experiencing a sore throat as it can facilitate the passage of bacteria and viruses into the lower respiratory tract, potentially leading to pneumonia. Individuals with bronchitis or pneumonia experience symptoms like persistent coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing up colored mucus.

To prevent respiratory illnesses and promote overall respiratory health, good hygiene practices should be followed closely. This includes avoiding close contact with individuals with respiratory infections, wearing masks when necessary, regularly cleaning surfaces to reduce the risk of infection. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding cold drinks are also recommended strategies for managing a sore throat. Honey or herbal teas can soothe the throat while humidifying the air can help relieve symptoms like dryness or itching in the nose or throat. Vaccination against respiratory diseases such as influenza and pneumococcus is also advised to reduce the risk of developing throat infections.

By taking these precautions and following these recommendations, individuals can minimize their chances of developing respiratory illnesses and maintain overall respiratory health.
