Matthew Winstead, a sophomore at South Central High School, had an outstanding performance at the recent Big Carolina Conference track and field meet. In an interview for the Pepsi Sports Spotlight, Winstead shared his love for running and the sense of freedom he feels when he’s on the track.

Winstead’s passion for running began in elementary school when he joined the running club in 3rd grade. During his freshman season, he suffered a foot injury that forced him to dial back his training. However, he bounced back stronger in his sophomore season and had one of his best seasons yet. At the conference championships, he won three events – the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m – earning 30 points for his team. His performance earned him the title of Big Carolina Conference Track and Field Player of the Year as a sophomore.

Looking ahead, Winstead hopes to continue running in college and is closing in on South Central’s records. His favorite event is the 800m, and his coach believes that with his work ethic and dedication, he can achieve great things in the sport. With two more years of high school ahead of him, the sky’s the limit for Matthew Winstead in the world of track and field.
