An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of Sonoma County from Tuesday morning, July 2 to Friday evening, July 5. Dr. Tanya Phares, the County of Sonoma Health Officer, has responded by issuing a Heat Advisory in response to this warning. An extreme heat event is an extended period of intense heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees, which can pose serious health risks.
During extremely hot conditions, evaporation slows down and the body has to work harder to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to heat-related illnesses and even death if the human body is pushed beyond its limits. To help stay cool during this heatwave, residents can visit one of several cooling centers available to the public.
The COTS Mary Isaak Center in Petaluma will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Rohnert Park Community Center is open Tuesday through Wednesday and Friday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., while the Finley Community Center in Santa Rosa is open Tuesday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Senior Recreation Center Cooling Safe Haven in Windsor is open Tuesday to Wednesday from 9 a.m
