Sonoma County Residents Advised to Take Precautions Amid Poor Air Quality Due to Wildfires

On Tuesday, the Sonoma County health officer issued a warning urging residents to take precautions to protect their health as nearby wildfires impact air quality in the area. The two regions most affected by poor air quality are Sonoma Valley and Napa, according to Department of Health Services spokesperson Sheri Cardo.

County officials suspect that the poor air quality is a result of smoke from the Site Fire in Colusa County moving towards Sonoma County. In areas between Sonoma and Santa Rosa, the air quality index has risen to over 160, as reported by the PurpleAir air quality map. However, in cities farther south and west like Rohnert Park and Petaluma, air quality indices have remained below 50 and are considered satisfactory.

To monitor air pollution levels and smoke in their neighborhoods, residents can visit the EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map. The health officer’s advisory recommended that Sonoma County residents stay indoors to avoid poor air quality and keep doors and windows closed, as well as set air conditioning units to recirculate indoor air only.

To protect against the effects of poor air quality, the advisory suggested limiting outdoor activities, especially for older adults, pregnant women, children, and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions. It also advised staying hydrated, avoiding activities that can worsen air pollution, such as driving or barbecuing, and refraining from smoking or burning wood. The health officer noted that while some parts of Sonoma County may not be as impacted by poor air quality due to changing local conditions
