A recent health check-up for a 69-year-old woman in Hanoi revealed a malignant kidney tumor. The tumor, only 1 cm in diameter, was the size of a pea. To preserve her kidney and eliminate the cancer completely, the doctor decided to partially remove the tumor.

Biopsy results showed that Ms. Binh’s renal cell carcinoma was in a very early stage (T1), causing no symptoms. Dr. Vu Huu Khiem, Head of Oncology Department at Tam Anh General Hospital, explained that at this stage, tumors are usually less than 7 cm in size. In Ms. Binh’s case, the tumor was very small, at 10.55×8 mm, comparable to a pea.

Due to Ms. Binh’s previous history of ovarian cancer, brain tumor surgery, and poor health, doctors opted to perform laparoscopic surgery to remove part of her right kidney. This minimally invasive procedure was effective in removing the tumor while preserving more healthy kidney tissue. Dr. Khiem highlighted the benefits of laparoscopic surgery, including less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.

The surgery was conducted by Associate Professor Dr. Tran Van Hinh and was successful in removing the tumor along with the right half of Ms. Binh’s kidney
