Catawba County, a region situated near Charlotte, is facing challenges with growth. Despite surrounding counties experiencing double digit population increases over the past three years, Catawba County has only seen a 2.5% growth rate. This puts them significantly behind neighboring counties like Lincoln and Iredell, which are growing at a much faster pace.

Concerned about the declining population of the 25-44 age group, county officials such as Commissioner Randy Isenhower recognize that attracting a younger population is crucial for the county’s future. Municipalities like Hickory, Newton, and Sherrils Ford Terrell are already taking steps to bring in younger residents by offering entertainment options and job opportunities.

While manufacturing has traditionally been the main source of jobs in Catawba County, officials are looking to diversify and create a mix of industries with higher paying jobs. Data centers are being viewed as an attractive way to bring in investment without putting pressure on the workforce supply. However, balancing the needs of the older population while planning for the future remains challenging.

Mary Furtado, the County Manager, acknowledges concerns from long-time residents who fear losing their identity as Catawba County grows and changes. Nevertheless, she emphasizes the importance of attracting a younger population and diversifying the economy to ensure long-term sustainability. With a focus on creating job opportunities and improving entertainment options, Catawba County is working towards a more vibrant and diverse future.
