Slovenia has recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign state, announced by Prime Minister Robert Golob following a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The decision still needs to be confirmed by parliament, with a vote expected next week. Once approved, Slovenia will fully recognize the Palestinian state.

The government’s message of recognition is one of peace and not directed against any particular party. Golob emphasized that the two-state solution is crucial for peace in the Middle East and expects other Western and Arab countries to follow suit. Other countries, such as Spain, Ireland, and Norway, have also recently recognized Palestine as an independent state. However, major Western nations like the USA and Great Britain, as well as most EU states, including Austria, have not yet done so.

Slovenia’s decision comes amidst efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. The borders outlined in a UN resolution will guide recognition within 1967 borders or any future borders agreed upon in a peace agreement. The Slovenian parliament is expected to vote on recognition next Tuesday and it is anticipated to pass with support from all three coalition parties.
