The UIL Academics state competition took place last week, and Slidell finished in the top two honors in the team computer science category. The team, consisting of individual finishers Raegan Davis (4th), Caden Brown (6th), Seth Richards (8th), and Landon Jarrett (20th), earned a team score of 408, finishing 41 points behind the first-place team from Aspermont. In addition to their success in computer science, Slidell teams also placed in accounting (5th), journalism (6th), and speech (24th). The school’s top individual finishers outside of computer science were Hazel Davis in the headline writing competition (5th) and Madison McCullough in spelling (5th).
At the same competition, Decatur’s Josh Hartenberger had the highest placement among Wise County students in an individual competition, coming in third in feature writing with 10 points. This placed him behind Hardin-Jefferson’s Trinity Moody and Fredericksburg’s Aven Ottmers, who had 12 and 15 points respectively. Bridgeport’s Levi Redder, competing in the spelling competition for the first time, finished 13th. Boyd’s representative in the ready writing category, Felicity Martin, finished in 6th place.
