The recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Singapore has prompted the Ministry of Health to advise residents to wear medical masks once again. From May 5 to May 11, a staggering 25,900 cases were detected, an increase from the previous week’s 13,700 cases. Additionally, hospitalizations have also seen a sharp rise from 181 cases per day to 250 cases per day during the same time period.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has cautioned that this increase is a sign of a new wave of infections, which he expects will peak in four to six weeks, around early to mid-July. Those at highest risk include individuals with chronic illnesses, people over 60 years old, especially those residing in nursing homes for the elderly. He emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated, particularly for those in high-risk categories who have not received their vaccination within the last year.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for everyone to follow safety protocols and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from the virus. By wearing masks, practicing good hygiene, and getting vaccinated, residents can help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
