This past weekend, three popular beaches on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria were closed after a shark was spotted. The two-meter hammerhead shark was seen by tourists at Melenara beach in Telde, causing panic and resulting in the closure of the beach. Lifeguards hoisted the red flag and cleared the water while police and rescue teams searched for the animal with a drone. Another nearby beach, Salinetas, was also closed as a precaution.

On Sunday, after the beaches had reopened, more shark sightings were reported by tourists, leading to further closures and monitoring by emergency services. It is still unclear whether it was the same shark or multiple animals in the area. Luckily, no incidents occurred as hammerhead sharks are rarely involved in attacks on humans.

After multiple closures and sightings, the beaches finally reopened on Monday with no further shark sightings. The incident served as a reminder of the importance of monitoring and responding to wildlife encounters in popular tourist destinations like Gran Canaria.
