In May, Brown University senior Joshua Lobsenz set a new world record during his final semester. He accomplished this feat with the help of his bandmates, including head conductor Kanayo Duru, who was also a member of the Class of 2025 and studying computational biology.

During their performance on Brown’s College Green, Lobsenz’s 19-foot 4-inch conductor’s baton broke the previous record held by the Harvard Band. Duru described conducting with the baton as a unique experience that he enjoyed.

Lobsenz shared that his inspiration for this record-breaking performance came from previous attempts by Brown Band members more than a decade ago. He submitted an application to Guinness World Records in February 2022, which was approved within three months. With the help of his bandmates and following the guidelines set by Guinness World Records, they gathered evidence to officially set the new world record.

By achieving this goal, Lobsenz made history at Brown University in his final semester with dedication, planning, and teamwork.
