In recent days, the North Korean regime has escalated its tensions with South Korea by sending around 150 balloons across the border, each containing waste and propaganda leaflets. The military in South Korea has found these balloons, with nearly 100 being recovered in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. However, several are believed to still be in the air.

The contents of the bags attached to the balloons varied, including manure, plastic bottles, electric batteries, and pieces of shoes. The South Korean army warned residents of border provinces not to approach the balloons if found and to contact authorities instead. Experts have noted that the distinct smell coming from the bags may indicate that they contain animal excrement.

This action by North Korea is a violation of international law and a threat to the security of South Korean citizens. The South Korean army called on North Korea to stop these activities immediately. This incident follows a warning from a North Korean Vice Minister of Defense who threatened to scatter waste and filth in South Korea earlier this month.

In a separate incident, South Korean activists had sent 20 balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang leaflets and USB sticks containing K-pop songs and videos across the border earlier in the month. Balloons have been used by North Korean dissidents in South Korea for years to send messages encouraging North Koreans to resist the Pyongyang regime.

Overall, these actions by both sides are concerning and could lead to further escalation of tensions between North and South Korea. It is important for both countries to engage in peaceful dialogue and work towards finding a solution that respects international law and promotes peace and stability on the peninsula.
