Science Museum Oklahoma Bids Farewell to Iconic Planetarium with Spectacular Light and Sound Show

Science Museum Oklahoma is hosting a spectacular showcase of light and sound this summer as they say goodbye to their iconic planetarium. The exhibit, which has been open since 1978, will be demolished in the fall to make way for new museum attractions at 2020 Remington Pl. In its place, the museum is building a new Love’s Planetarium, set to open in the fall.

As a farewell to the current planetarium, the museum is hosting light shows featuring bright lasers and fog set to music from popular artists such as The Grateful Dead, Elton John, Queen, and The Beatles. Tickets for the light shows are $22.50 each, with all proceeds going towards the new planetarium’s support. Shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through June 15, with concessions available for guests.

Planetarium director Waylon Troyer explained that the light shows utilize a hazer to create a dense cloud of particles in the air in the form of fog. This fog serves as a medium for the laser light particles to scatter on, creating stunning visual effects. Light, although behaving as particles known as photons, also exhibits wave-like behavior in certain circumstances, as demonstrated through different interactions with fog and other materials.
