The Ontario Science Centre has abruptly closed its previous building due to structural concerns, with the government announcing on Friday that the science centre would permanently close at its east Toronto location following an engineering report on the state of the roof. In search of a temporary location, officials are now looking for a retail or commercial space to accommodate a smaller version of the science centre, ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 square feet. However, critics of the relocation to Ontario Place were already expressing concerns about the new building being only half the size of the original. The government has claimed that the new space at Ontario Place will have more exhibit space, but a report from the auditor general has pointed out that there will actually be 18% less. Overall, officials continue their search for a suitable space to continue programming and exhibits while waiting for the new location at Ontario Place to open in 2028.
