San Francisco 49ers safety Tashaun Gipson has been suspended by the NFL for six games due to a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. The specifics of the violation have not been disclosed, but it has resulted in a significant suspension for Gipson.

Despite his contributions on the field, Gipson, who played two seasons with the 49ers and was a full-time starter in 33 out of 34 games, was not offered an extension after playing on a one-year deal worth $2.9 million last season. As he turns 34 in August, Gipson is now a free agent. The suspension will likely impact his ability to find a new team during the offseason, as it makes him a less appealing option for teams in need of safety help heading into the upcoming season.

During his time with the 49ers, Gipson recorded impressive statistics including six tackles, one sack, one interception and three passes defended in the 2023 season as they made their way to the Super Bowl. In contrast during the 2022 season he had five interceptions and eight passes defended. Although these numbers are commendable they did not warrant an extension from his team despite being a Pro Bowler.
