Saab unveiled a new compact radar module for its Giraffe 1X multi-mission radar at the Eurosatory 2024 defense exhibition in Paris. This addition to the system is designed to improve operational flexibility and mobility, featuring an antenna that can be easily folded down into the lightweight radar with the push of a button. Despite its small footprint, the radar module has an impressive search area of up to 75 kilometers (46.6 miles), making it ideal for various operational environments, especially in areas with limited infrastructure.

According to Saab, the Compact Radar Module is a comprehensive radar solution that is well-suited for urgent missions where quick deployment is essential. The company’s official, Carl-Johan Bergholm, highlighted how this new module enhances the capabilities of the Giraffe 1X radar, providing customers with multiple deployment options to maximize operational effectiveness.

The Giraffe 1X radar itself is a high-performing 3D radar that effectively supports ground-based air defense operations. It is capable of detecting hostile drones and incoming missiles, while also providing commanders with critical target data for engagement. Weighing less than 150 kilograms (330 pounds), the radar can be easily integrated into various mobile platforms or fixed structures.

Saab emphasized that the Giraffe 1X radar and the new Compact Radar Module can now be delivered as a single operational item, offering support for a wide range of missions. This integrated approach ensures that customers have the necessary tools to address different operational challenges and achieve their objectives effectively.
