Saab, a leading defense and security company based in Sweden, has recently unveiled its Digital Tower Test Centre in Steenokkerzeel, Belgium. This test center is a prototype for the digital control center that Skeyes and Société Wallonne des Aéroports are developing in Namur, Belgium with plans to make it operational by 2026. The technology used at the test center is Saab’s Remote Tower (r-TWR) solution, which will be utilized to remotely manage air traffic at Charleroi and Liège airports, located 100 km apart.

The collaboration between Saab and Skeyes has brought advanced technologies such as camera technologies, simulators, and visual presentation to enhance reliability and safety for the air traffic controllers at the center. Additionally, Saab has integrated an airport surveillance and Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) functionality into the digital tower concept, enabling controllers to track aircraft movements accurately even in adverse weather conditions.

Beyond the collaboration with Skeyes in Namur, Saab is also involved in developing digital control centers in Flanders, Belgium. As a global leader in defense and security solutions, Saab’s mission is to help nations keep their people and society safe through technological advancements. With over 22,000 professionals worldwide, Saab designs, manufactures, and maintains advanced systems across various sectors including aeronautics, weapons command and control systems sensors underwater systems.
