The Russian authorities have identified over 10,000 naturalized men who were sent to participate in the war against Ukraine. Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Russian Investigative Committee and a close confidant of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, announced this at the Petersburg Lawyers’ Forum. These naturalized immigrants are primarily tasked with digging trenches and building fortifications for the military operations in Ukraine.

Recent reports suggest that security forces have been conducting raids on companies that employ migrant workers, particularly those from post-Soviet states in Central Asia. Russian media outlets have indicated that migrants who have already received Russian passports are being forcibly recruited, while others are promised an easier naturalization process if they agree to join the military operations in Ukraine.

According to Putin, there are currently 700,000 Russian soldiers at the front in Ukraine, some of whom were recruited during a partial mobilization in the fall of 2022. To compensate for potential losses without implementing further waves of mobilization, the Kremlin is exploring alternative methods of recruitment. Bastrykin also mentioned that the forced recruitment of naturalized citizens could lead to many migrants leaving Russia.
