Three men, a Russian, an Armenian, and a Ukrainian, were arrested in Frankfurt on suspicion of spying on a person from Ukraine on behalf of a foreign service. The suspects were believed to be collecting information on a Ukrainian individual while in Germany working for a foreign secret service. However, the specific country they were collaborating with was not mentioned in the press release.

The Ukrainian Robert A., the Armenian Vardges I., and the Russian Arman S. were taken into custody in Frankfurt and appeared before a judge who ordered their incarceration. The suspects had gone to a cafe in Frankfurt where their target was located. The targeted Ukrainian individual became suspicious of the suspects’ behavior and contacted the police, fearing an attack.

It is believed that the targeted individual had fought against the Russians, and with over a million Ukrainians seeking refuge in Germany since the start of the war in Ukraine, tensions are running high. This incident is one of many involving Russian espionage in Germany, with cases emerging since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In another case involving Russia’s espionage activities in Germany, former German secret agent is currently on trial for transmitting classified information to the Russian security services. Two individuals suspected of spying for the Kremlin were also arrested on suspicion of planning acts of sabotage against American military installations to undermine support for Ukraine.
