Russian cyberattacks have swept across Europe, with Germany and the Czech Republic accusing Russian hackers of orchestrating the attacks. The European Union has condemned these cyberattacks, with both Berlin and Prague pointing to Russian involvement in the attacks.

Germany revealed that members of the German Social Democratic Party were targeted in a cyberattack in January 2023, attributing the attack to a group called APT28, which is linked to Russia’s intelligence services. The Czech Republic also stated that it had been the target of cyberattacks orchestrated by a group with ties to Russian military intelligence.

The cyberattacks in Germany targeted not only political parties but also government services, companies in various sectors, and several foundations and associations. The Czech institutions that were targeted saw several dozen attacks, although specific details were not provided.

Both Germany and the Czech Republic accused the Russian hacker group APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, of being responsible for the cyberattacks. This group has been linked to numerous cyberattacks around the world, targeting governmental entities, companies, universities, research institutes, and think tanks for espionage purposes.

The European Union has condemned these cyberattacks and is determined to take measures to prevent, deter, and respond to Russia’s malicious behavior in cyberspace. The Russian government has denied involvement in the cyberattacks, but Germany has summoned the charge d’affaires of the Russian embassy to address the issue.
