Russian border guard troops withdrew from the Gegharkunik region in 2024 after coming under bombardment during an operation to meet with Azerbaijani armed forces in the Upper Shorzha area. The governor of the region, Karen Sargsyan, revealed this information to journalists on the same day as the September events.
