In a significant milestone for Russia’s quest for technological independence, the country has unveiled its first hydraulic fracturing fleet. This project, which has been in the works for almost a decade, has recently completed testing and is set to begin commercial operations in 2025.

The hydraulic fracturing fleet, comprised of 12 units, was created by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (Mitt) in collaboration with Gazprom Neft as part of Russia’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imports. The fleet underwent successful trials at various fields owned by Gazprom Neft in West Siberia, which is a key region for oil production in Russia.

Mitt has indicated that it is planning to produce up to four fleets by 2026, with Gazprom Neft set to be the first customer of this cutting-edge technology. This development signifies an important step towards enhancing Russia’s technological sovereignty and ensuring its energy security for the future. With this domestically developed fracking capacity, Russia will be able to tap into more of its hard-to-recover reserves in the years ahead.
