Rogers Communications successfully tested 5G Cloud-Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) technology during a near-capacity Toronto Blue Jays game on Canada Day in partnership with Ericsson. This marked the first time this cutting-edge technology was utilized on a commercial network at a live event in Canada.

Rogers’ commitment to providing Canadians with the best networks and global technology is evident through its national network investments. As Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network, covering over 2,300 communities, Rogers continues to innovate in the realm of 5G wireless technology. From being recognized as the best wireless network in Canada by umlaut for five consecutive years to conducting live tests of industry-leading technologies like 5G network slicing with Ericsson, Rogers is dedicated to enhancing the wireless experience for Canadians.

The implementation of Cloud RAN technology builds on Rogers’ national standalone 5G core network, which was launched in 2021. This technology is crucial as Rogers moves towards the next generation of networks, allowing for faster responses to market demands, advancements in 5G technology, improved network reliability, and energy efficiency. Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Rogers, emphasized the importance of cloud-native technology in the evolution of wireless networks. By completing Canada’s first deployment of 5G Cloud RAN technology at a major live event, Rogers is taking steps to ensure the delivery of reliable and consistent network services across the country for both consumers and enterprise customers.
