Recently, students at Irving Branch Elementary School on Edwards AFB completed a hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) project where they built, painted and launched 12 rockets. This project provided students with an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a real-world scenario.

To begin the project, students first learned about the different parts of a rocket and how they work together. Following precise instructions, they built functional rockets, paying close attention to detail. Making mistakes was seen as a learning opportunity, enabling students to problem-solve and ensure the quality of their final product.

Once the rockets were built, students painted and named each one. Integrating art into the STEM project allowed for creativity, self-expression, communication and compromise among team members with differing ideas and preferences. This process not only enhanced their artistic skills but also taught them valuable teamwork and collaboration skills that will serve them well in future projects.

Finally, students watched as their rockets were launched from a safe distance. Seeing their rockets soar into the sky and return to the ground filled them with excitement and joy. Each rocket performed uniquely prompting students to think critically and explain their observations. Despite the short duration of each launch, the impact of the project on the students was lasting instilling in them a growth mindset that they can carry forward in their lives.
