The 6th National Hypertension Conference, held on June 14-15, was led by Professor Dr. Huynh Van Minh, President of the Vietnam Cardiology Association. The event featured discussions about the current state of hypertension and its significance in the Asian-Pacific region, where Vietnam is among the countries with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease and a risk of death from non-communicable diseases.

Hypertension is becoming increasingly common among younger individuals, with many people under 40 years old experiencing strokes or myocardial infarctions. This global trend affects individuals of all ages, including children and young adults. Approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide have high blood pressure, leading to 9.4 million deaths annually. In Vietnam, about 12 million individuals have hypertension, meaning that one in five adults is affected. Despite treatment options available, hypertension often goes undetected or uncontrolled in Vietnam.

The conference emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications in managing hypertension effectively, as it is not only a standalone disease but also a contributing factor to other conditions like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and lipid disorders. Family medicine and primary care play a crucial role in hypertension management by providing continuous care, prevention strategies, and coordination with specialists to improve patient outcomes and reduce cardiovascular risks associated with hypertension. Measuring blood pressure at home was recommended as a valuable tool in managing hypertension effectively and promoting treatment adherence while monitoring progress accurately.

The conference addressed new approaches to hypertension management through technology and global recommendations for early screening and prevention strategies to promote better hypertension management practices and reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases in Vietnam.
