The county is experiencing an increase in homelessness, with over 10,600 people currently without stable housing. This represents a modest 3% increase from last year, as reported by the latest Point-in-Time Count. Research has shown that the primary causes of homelessness are income-based and the high cost of housing. In response to this issue, state and local leaders have been focusing on transforming how mental health and addiction issues are addressed, particularly within the homeless population.

One example of this effort is Proposition 1, which was narrowly approved by California voters in March. This proposition will provide additional funding for shelter beds and treatment for unhoused individuals with severe mental illness. On Midday Edition Wednesday, the show delves into the potential impact of Proposition 1 on San Diego County’s Behavioral Health Services. Additionally, the HOME program in La Mesa shares their initiatives to provide support and resources for housing and mental health.

The guests featured on the show include Luke Bergmann, the director of San Diego County Behavioral Health Services, Matthew Smiley, a clinical homeless outreach specialist for the HOME program, and Joanna Savarese, a neuropsychologist and clinical psychologist who is the founder and clinical director of San Diego BrainWorks. The discussion also includes tips on managing mental health and well-being in everyday life, especially as we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month.
