Elysis, a cutting-edge carbon-free technology company, is set to partner with Rio Tinto to adopt their innovative technology at the Arvida smelting complex in Quebec, Canada. This move aims to accelerate the transition towards more environmentally friendly production methods in the aluminum industry.

Rio Tinto will replace traditional aluminum production methods with Elysis’s inert anode technology, which eliminates carbon emissions while producing oxygen. The pilot plant, scheduled for completion in 2027, will consist of 10 furnaces operating at 100 kiloamperes and will produce up to 2,500 tonnes of commercial-quality aluminum without directly emitting any greenhouse gases.

In Canada alone, this technology could reduce approximately 7 million tons of greenhouse gases per year. The use of Elysis technology also promises improvements in occupational health and safety, reduced capital intensity and operating costs, and increased productivity. This makes it a win-win solution for both the environment and the bottom line.

Elysis is not stopping there; they are currently developing larger 450kA test chambers at Rio Tinto’s Alma smelter with the goal of further reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable production process for aluminum products. With these developments, Elysis is paving the way towards a greener future in the aluminum industry.

In summary, Rio Tinto’s decision to adopt Elysis’s innovative technology marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the aluminum industry. The pilot plant set to start operations in 2027 has the potential to produce commercial-quality aluminum without directly emitting any greenhouse gases while improving occupational health and safety and reducing costs. Further development of this technology could lead to even more significant reductions in carbon emissions and contribute towards a more sustainable future for all industries involved.
