The right-wing extremist party National Gathering (RN) is expected to win 34 percent in the first round of the parliamentary elections in France, according to a recent survey conducted by IFOP opinion research institute for broadcaster TF1 and newspaper Le Figaro. President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance is projected to receive 22 percent of the vote. The Popular Front, an alliance of left-wing parties, is in second place with 29 percent.

Concerns have been raised about the impact of a right-wing extremist election victory in France, with questions about whether the EU is punishing Paris for its high debt. The potential consequences for the euro if France were to derail have been highlighted, as well as concerns about the party’s stance on issues such as being close to Putin and anti-German.

The early parliamentary elections in France are scheduled for June 30 and July 7. Following a clear defeat in the European Parliament vote, Macron ordered the elections.
