Rheinmetall Provectus, a company specializing in autonomous navigation solutions, has partnered with GPR Ground Positioning Radar, a leading provider of ground-penetrating radar technology for autonomous vehicle localization. This collaboration aims to integrate GPR’s WaveSense localization system into Rheinmetall Provectus’ autonomous platforms, thereby enhancing the positioning and navigation capabilities of vehicles in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are unavailable.

During the third and fourth quarters of 2023, a proof of concept (PoC) was conducted in rugged terrains in Ontario, Canada to test the effectiveness of WaveSense technology in GNSS-denied environments. The successful PoC demonstrated the potential of WaveSense to improve autonomous navigation in challenging conditions. Both GPR and Rheinmetall Provectus have dedicated significant resources to ensure the robust integration of the WaveSense system, making it ready for deployment.

The integration is expected to enable new functionalities such as beyond line of sight (BLOS) operations and GNSS-denied leader-follower operations. These new functionalities will be critical for military applications where vehicles need to operate in harsh conditions without relying on GPS signals. The partnership between GPR and Rheinmetall Provectus will pave the way for future advancements in autonomous navigation technology that can enhance military capabilities while reducing risks associated with traditional navigation systems.
