A Portsmouth, Virginia municipal solid waste (MSW) facility has implemented an AMP ONE system, a cutting-edge technology for separating mixed recyclables and organic materials from contaminated waste streams without manual labor. The facility processes 150 tons of local MSW daily with over 90% uptime.

The RDS facility in Portsmouth uses the AMP ONE system to separate bagged trash into mixed recyclables, organics, and residue. This technology enables the facility to divert more than 60% of landfill-bound material when combined with organics management and mixed recyclables sorting systems. As a result, it extends the life of landfills, reduces environmental impact, and keeps disposal costs low.

The CEO of AMP, Matanya Horowitz, views the success of the Portsmouth facility as a blueprint for other municipalities looking to achieve diversion targets and extend the life of their landfills. Joe Benedetto, president of RDS, emphasizes the use of advanced technologies like the AMP ONE system to increase recovery and landfill diversion while lowering processing costs and generating continuous improvement data.

In 2023, RDS completed a new 33,000-square-foot building at its site in Portsmouth and installed an AMP ONE system to process MSW. The company also operates facilities in Roanoke, Virginia; Greenville, North Carolina; and Athens, Georgia.
