The Tribeca Festival is set to feature five short films created using OpenAI’s Sora tool on June 15. Filmmakers who were given early access to Sora have reportedly completed their projects in just weeks, thanks to the tool’s ability to greatly facilitate their artistic process. This collaboration between OpenAI and the festival represents the first time that artificial intelligence will be featured at Tribeca.
The filmmakers, all of whom are festival alumni, were provided with education on OpenAI’s tools and the freedom to create their videos independently. Jane Rosenthal, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, expressed her excitement about the innovative films that will come out of this collaboration.
OpenAI introduced Sora earlier this year, claiming it can generate videos up to a minute long from text to simulate the physical world in motion. Despite some initial concerns from Hollywood veterans about AI being a threat, those who have used Sora have found that it enhances their creative process and allows them to communicate abstract concepts more clearly.
This partnership between OpenAI and the Tribeca Festival showcases the increasing influence and capabilities of artificial intelligence in the creative industry. Axel Springer, the parent company of Business Insider, has a global deal with OpenAI to train its models on the media brands’ reporting.
