A new breakthrough in renewable energy has been achieved with the development of a thermal solar cell, also known as a TPV cell or thermophotovoltaic cell, that sets a new record for efficiency. This technology could have significant applications in thermal batteries and utilizing industrial waste heat.

The researchers at the University of Michigan have developed TPV cells that convert heat into electricity using silicon carbide as the heat storage material, surrounded by a semiconductor made of indium, gallium, and arsenic. Heating the silicon carbide material releases thermal photons, which are then captured by the semiconductor material. By reflecting photons back to the material being heated, the cell achieved an efficiency of 44 percent in tests.

Renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly important as demand for energy increases globally. However, these sources can be weather-dependent and require new solutions like energy storage to support the electricity system. One such solution is thermal batteries that store energy as heat.

TPV cells hold promise for expanding the use of thermal batteries and advancing renewable energy storage solutions. The ultimate goal is to reach an efficiency of at least 50 percent, with the possibility of the technology being applied in various industries to utilize waste heat. The study has been published in the journal Joule.
