Teachers in Minnesota will soon be required to use a new curriculum based on the science of reading, starting in the fall of 2025. Instead of relying on guessing words based on first letters or pictures, students will now focus on attending to each sound in a word to become fluent readers. The change is part of the READ Act, which was passed by the Minnesota legislature in 2023 and includes additional funding added during the latest legislative session.

Training teachers in the science of reading is essential for implementing this curriculum, according to Katharine Campbell, Director of Groves Literacy Partnerships. Groves has been assisting schools with this approach for over a decade by providing a model that incorporates the new curriculum and offering coaching support to teachers to enhance their literacy instruction skills.

The focus on the science of reading in education is expected to improve students’ reading abilities and enhance overall literacy instruction in Minnesota schools. For more information about Groves and their literacy programs, visit https://www.groveslearning.org/.
