Commuter rail operator Metrolink has announced the deployment of new “smart crossing” technology at a grade crossing in San Juan Capistrano. The Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop system aims to prevent the activation of crossing gates when a train approaches a station and stops before reaching the crossing. This initiative was made possible through a CRISI grant and will be implemented at the Del Obispo Street crossing near the San Juan Capistrano station starting June 1.

The introduction of this technology is expected to reduce wait times and discourage unsafe behaviors such as drivers and pedestrians bypassing activated crossing gates. This new approach to rail safety is seen as crucial in improving safety and efficiency in rail infrastructure, according to Doug Chaffee, Metrolink board vice chair. Initially, the system will focus on southbound Metrolink trains at the San Juan Capistrano station, with plans to expand it to include Pacific Surfliner trains in the future.

Metrolink is collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to install the Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop system at 42 crossings within a half-mile radius. This new technology is part of Metrolink’s commitment to enhancing safety and efficiency across its system. In addition to the San Juan Capistrano crossing, there are seven other crossings equipped with this WCNSS technology in San Bernardino and Redlands, serving Arrow service that began operating between these two communities in October 2022. This innovative approach to rail safety and efficiency is expected to benefit both San Juan Capistrano residents and communities across the Metrolink network.
