Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is revolutionizing the field of osteoporosis diagnosis and management by analyzing X-ray films to help doctors evaluate bone density and predict fractures. This innovative approach offers a more efficient alternative to traditional machine measurements, such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Professor Nguyen Van Tuan from Tam Anh Research Institute and the University of Technology Sydney discussed these advancements at a conference on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in Tuy Hoa City. Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney have developed an AI application called xBMD that can accurately predict bone density from X-ray films, making it easier for healthcare providers to diagnose osteoporosis with up to 95% accuracy.

In addition to measuring bone density, AI models like SBA (Shape-Based Algorithm) are being used to automatically diagnose vertebral fractures by analyzing X-ray films. These advancements in AI technology are particularly valuable in regions where access to DXA machines is limited. By leveraging AI technologies, healthcare providers can take proactive measures to prevent and manage osteoporosis effectively, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.

Osteoporosis is a leading cause of bone fractures, particularly among postmenopausal women and the elderly. Many individuals with osteoporosis do not receive proper treatment, leading to serious health complications.
