Researchers at the Center for Tropical Forestry, in collaboration with various research units, have successfully developed a method for producing seeds and medicinal herbs from three varieties of yellow camellia in Lam Dong. This achievement is the result of a national scientific mission under the Program on conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources to 2025, with a vision to 2030 led by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Dr. Tran Hong Son, from the Tropical Forestry Center of the Institute of Forestry Sciences of the South Central and Central Highlands, was responsible for overseeing the experimental production of varieties and cultivation of medicinal herbs from Camellia dalatensis, Camellia dormoyana, and Camellia thuongiana in Lam Dong. The research was conducted from late 2018 to May 2024 and involved perfecting breeding processes, planting techniques, care methods, harvesting, pre-processing, and preserving of the medicinal yellow flower tea.

The project established basic standards for the varieties and medicinal herbs of the three types of tea, set up a seed garden of 1,000 m² per species, and a propagation garden of 2,000 m² per species. Additionally, the research team developed a model following GACP-WHO standards for the three species of yellow camellia and transferred high-yield intensive cultivation techniques in Lam Dong. The results of the research and variety testing can potentially be scaled up for wider adoption and contribute to the selection of new varieties in different ecological regions.
