Recently, scientists have made significant advancements in gene-editing technology that allow them to create new chimeras beyond bacteria. For example, they have developed mouse embryos with human cells and grown brains composed of rat and mouse cells. In a major milestone, surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a human patient. The pig genes were removed and human genes added to improve compatibility with the human immune system. The patient was discharged from the hospital in April but unfortunately passed away in May from unrelated causes.
