Firefighters across the country will soon have access to a new and innovative tool for testing, thanks to a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and Qwake Technologies. The C-THRU device is a helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device that allows first responders to see through dark smoke, improving their situational awareness, effectiveness, and reducing exposure to carcinogens.

The funding award of $4.7 million from S&T will support the production of 400 C-THRU devices for testing in real-life situations in various environments and scenarios. Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of improved equipment and technology for first responders in saving lives and ensuring firefighter safety. He highlighted the collaborative efforts between S&T and industry partners to address challenges faced by first responders and leverage emerging technology to meet their needs.

Fire departments interested in testing the new technology must submit their applications by July 31, 2024. The data collected from the testing will be used to refine and optimize the product for real-world use before its commercial release. The initiative aims to enhance the safety and effectiveness of firefighters by providing them with cutting-edge technology for improved performance in firefighting situations.

The testing of the C-THRU device will take place in 80 fire departments across the country, covering all FEMA regions. Prototypes will be distributed to fire departments of varying sizes, missions, and operating environments. Participating fire departments will have the opportunity to define their own operational use and training standards for the equipment, ensuring that it meets their specific needs.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in equipping first responders with advanced technology that can help them navigate through smoke-filled environments more effectively while minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals.

Overall, this innovative new tool is an essential step towards enhancing firefighter safety while improving their ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
