The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that a cutting-edge device known as C-THRU could soon be accessible to fire departments across the United States. Developed in collaboration with Austin, Texas-based startup Qwake Technologies through a 2020 contract, C-THRU aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of first responders in challenging environments.

C-THRU is a hands-free, lightweight device equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that offers a real-time view of the surrounding environment. Firefighters can use the device to navigate through dark smoke and provide turn-by-turn guidance for backtracking. In case of emergency, the device includes a mayday function that alerts other C-THRU wearers in the vicinity to locate the distressed responder. Additionally, C-THRU’s system is designed to continuously improve through over-the-air software updates.

According to Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, enhancing the equipment and technology available to first responders can significantly contribute to saving lives and protecting firefighters. The Department believes that collaborative partnerships with industry players, like Qwake Technologies, help address crucial challenges faced by first responders and leverage emerging technologies to meet their urgent needs. There are currently 400 prototype devices available for fire departments to apply for, offering them a valuable tool to enhance their firefighting capabilities.
