European defense firm MBDA has unveiled a new AI-powered tool called the “Ground Warden” that allows military units to detect hidden targets. This portable module uses beyond line-of-sight technology to identify targets even in the most challenging combat environments. The system analyzes data from surveillance drones and suggests attack options to missile operators, helping them intercept hidden targets with precision.

During a demonstration at the Eurosatory 2024 defense exhibition in Paris, MBDA showcased the Ground Warden’s capabilities. In one scenario, a drone detected an enemy tank in a village, allowing an artillery unit to launch a missile strike. The missile captured imagery while approaching the target, enabling the Ground Warden to identify two more hidden tanks for subsequent attacks. Another simulation displayed in a promotional video highlighted the system’s effectiveness when paired with an unmanned aerial vehicle. The drone provided data to the AI-enabled tool, which offered precise target locations to the gunner.

Despite utilizing AI for analyzing battlefield data, MBDA ensures that a human remains in the loop to oversee operations and guarantee safety. According to program lead Laurent Duport, this human-AI collaboration is crucial as they believe AI is not yet fully developed. With this approach, the Ground Warden has reportedly achieved a 100% strike rate for the French Army.

In conclusion, MBDA’s Ground Warden is an innovative solution that utilizes advanced technology and human collaboration to detect and neutralize hidden targets on the battlefield. As such, it represents a significant leap forward in military technology and could prove instrumental in future conflicts.
