The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is set to make available a helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device that enables first responders to see through dark smoke. The device, known as C-THRU, was developed by a startup called Qwake Technologies in collaboration with DHS through a 2020 contract focused on fire safety technology.
Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of providing improved equipment and technology to first responders to enhance their safety and effectiveness. The C-THRU device is designed to be hands-free, lightweight, and equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that provides a clear real-time view of the surroundings. It also includes navigation features for backtracking and turn-by-turn guidance for firefighters.
The device has a mayday function that can be activated in case a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building. This function alerts other C-THRU wearers in the vicinity to assist in locating the distressed firefighter. Additionally, the system will be continuously updated with over-the-air software updates to enhance its capabilities.
Qwake Technologies has collaborated with DHS to develop this cutting-edge technology that will provide first responders with an enhanced level of safety and effectiveness in critical situations. There are 400 prototype devices available for fire departments across the country to apply for, with the goal of providing this technology nationwide.
