A new modular mobile overpass design called the ASTRA bridge is transforming road repairs in Switzerland. The innovative design allows vehicles to drive directly above the section of highway that needs repair, eliminating the need for detours. Developed by the Swiss Federal Road Agency, the ASTRA bridge aims to make travel more convenient for drivers and safer for road workers.
The initial version of the ASTRA bridge was tested on the Swiss A1 motorway section in 2022, followed by a new and improved version that was installed in April 2025. This version will remain until August. When roadwork is scheduled, the affected side of the highway is closed over the weekend, and trucks carrying different sections of the ASTRA bridge arrive at night. Workers then assemble the overpass that spans the length of the road repair area, with ramps at both ends for vehicles to pass through.
