On Monday at the WWDC keynote, Apple unveiled its new suite of generative AI features called Apple Intelligence. These features will be free for users and will be rolled out to US users later this year on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. One of the most exciting features of Apple Intelligence is the revamped Siri, which promises to be more useful by accessing specific actions within apps.

The AI tasks that these features will handle range from drafting emails to generating custom images and emojis. These tasks will be handled by the chips within the Apple devices themselves, meaning users will need the latest iPhones, iPads, or Macs to access Apple Intelligence. Specifically, users will need at least an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPad or Mac with the M1 chip.

Apple Intelligence also offers integration with ChatGPT for some tasks, providing a seamless experience for users. For those with older iPhones, they can still use the ChatGPT iOS app. This move by Apple comes after declines in iPhone sales and data showing that people are holding onto their phones for longer due to incremental upgrades and higher prices.

By introducing AI features as an opportunity for users to upgrade to the latest devices, Apple hopes to provide users with new reasons to upgrade. Ultimately, iPhone owners will need to determine if Apple Intelligence is compelling enough to make the switch to newer devices. With these new features and benefits, it might just be time for some iPhone owners to upgrade their devices and take advantage of what Apple Intelligence has to offer.
