In Reno, Nevada, the issue of mental health is just as significant as it is nationwide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, over 474,000 adults in Nevada suffer from a mental health condition, which is more than eight times the population of Carson City. This number highlights the need for action to address these issues and provide resources to those who need them.

One particular group that is at higher risk of mental health conditions is older individuals. Stressors related to aging, such as decline in physical health and loneliness, can make seniors more vulnerable to mental illness. Annette Junell, co-founder of Retired Living Truth Series, shared a story about a gentleman who expressed anger and loneliness after losing his wife and feeling isolated. This story underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues in our community’s elderly population.

Brett Junell, co-founder of Retired Living Truth Series, emphasizes that mental health issues are not limited to older adults but also affect younger generations. As we age, changes in mental capacity, loss of loved ones and physical changes can all lead to depression. To address these challenges head-on, Retired Living Truth Series hosts free monthly seminars with experts to provide education and resources for seniors facing mental health challenges. These seminars offer a safe space for difficult conversations and aim to help individuals recognize and address their mental health issues.

The upcoming Retired Living Truth Series seminar on Thursday, June 20 will focus on “The Truth About Our Mental Health as We Age” at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The seminar aims to provide education and resources for individuals seeking answers about their mental health concerns as they age. It will empower attendees with knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and live an empowered life despite any challenges they may face.
