Alison Ricker, a dedicated Science Librarian who spent 40 years at Oberlin College, passed away on May 14 at the age of 70. Throughout her career, she transitioned the Science Library from a print-based collection to an essential online research resource and oversaw its move to its current location in the newly constructed Science Center in 2001.

In recognition of her contributions, Ricker received the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award from the Academic Library Association of Ohio in 2001. She was also actively involved in various academic initiatives, campus organizations, and social causes during her time at Oberlin. Additionally, she was a member of Musical Union and participated in the conservatory’s tour to New York City in January 2023.

Prior to working at Oberlin, Ricker was a librarian at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, Georgia. She held a master’s degree in library science from the University of Rhode Island and was known for her commitment to students and faculty needs.

Valerie Hotchkiss, Azariah S. Root Director of Libraries at Oberlin College, remembered Ricker as “a remarkable individual who made significant contributions to our academic community.” She is survived by her husband Ray English, who served as Azariah S. Root Emeritus Director of Libraries at Oberlin College and their sons John and Michael. A funeral service will be held on June 22nd with celebration of life following at First Church Oberlin (UCC).
